Who Was Susie King Taylor?

EDUCATOR, CIVIL WAR UNION NURSE, AUTHOR

Susie King Taylor was the first Black educator to teach openly in a school for formerly enslaved students, and the only Black woman to publish a memoir of her Civil war experiences in America, ‘Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33rd United States Troops, Late 1st S.C. Volunteers, Circa 1902.

From the Library of Congress:

‘For African American nurses like Taylor, their contributions to the war were not given space in the American memory. Even when historians began writing about women and children, the achievements of African American women surfaced slowly.’

Current Exhibition:

‘The Unlikely Liberators' Eric Saul, Curator, retired Military Historian

“There are many people who do not know what some of the colored women did during the Civil War.”
- Reminiscences of My Life in Camp, by Susie King Taylor

Susie Baker, the daughter of enslaved parents, was born into slavery on August 6, 1848, at the Grest Plantation in Liberty County, Georgia. Her 83-page memoir depicts her life as a slave, a freed woman, and a Black woman living in the postwar South.
